Modeling and Measurement Techniques for Thin-Film Corrosion on Steel: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract:
<p class="MsoNormal">An overview of methods for modeling thin-film corrosion of steel, which occurs at the interface of solid/liquid/gaseous phases, is given. The instability of the thickness of thin electrolyte layers creates difficulties during electrochemical studies, which are overcome by creating controlled conditions under which a constant relative humidity of the air is maintained; however, it is difficult to eliminate them due to the condensation of moisture of uneven thickness. Possible areas of investigation of corrosion processes in thin layers of aqueous electrolyte in soil conditions are the study of the influence of polymer layers on the stability of the wettable film, the geometry of thin films depending on the shape of drops, and multilayer oxide surfaces. The importance of developing corrosion monitoring methods for protective intact coatings or coatings that are just beginning to degrade is emphasized.</p>
