A short review on the organic-based nanocomposite coatings for corrosion prevention

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:150%">Epoxy based nanocomposite coatings have gained significant attention as advanced organic protective systems due to their ability to overcome the inherent limitations of conventional polymer coatings in corrosive environments. This review focuses specifically on recent developments in epoxy nanocomposite coatings, emphasizing the incorporation of nanoscale fillers such as graphene derivatives, metal oxide nanoparticles, nanoclays, layered double hydroxides, and hybrid nanostructures, and their influence on corrosion protection performance. The discussion is centered on structure property relationships, including nanoparticle dispersion, interfacial bonding, barrier enhancement mechanisms, and electrochemical stability, rather than reiterating general corrosion fundamentals. Recent studies demonstrate that the introduction of well dispersed nanofillers into epoxy matrices significantly reduces electrolyte permeation, enhances coating integrity, and delays coating degradation under aggressive exposure conditions. In addition, multifunctional nanocomposite systems incorporating self-healing agents and corrosion inhibitors are critically examined for their role in extending service life and improving long term durability. Sustainable developments, including waterborne epoxy nanocomposites and environmentally benign nanofillers, are also evaluated with respect to their corrosion resistance performance, processing challenges, and industrial applicability. By consolidating and critically analysing recent nanocomposite focused literature, this review identifies current limitations, unresolved challenges, and future research directions in the design of epoxy-based nanocomposite coatings for advanced corrosion protection applications.</p>
